‘Die Jockey,’ ‘Pyscho,’ ‘Odds Calais Summer Days’ & Hugh Jackman’s Other Japanese Lessons

Hugh Jackman while in Japan recently to film the latest installment of the “Wolverine” series of movies.
“Psycho,” “Die Jockey!” and “Odds Calais Summer Days” were some of the phrases given on a Japanese language cheat sheet Hollywood heartthrob Hugh Jackman used recently in Japan while here to film the latest installment of the Wolverine movies.
Far from being anything sinister, though, Psycho was the description given for saiko, awesome, great, outstanding, the best, Die jockey! the rendition of dai jokki, a large beer glass, and Odds Calais Summer Days, which sounds something akin to a vacation on the French coast, but actually refers to otsukaresamadesu, a largely meaningless phrase used to encourage or praise a colleague upon completing a task and that literally translates to “you are honorably tired.”
とお疲れ様ですがOdds Calais Summer Days(オッズ、<フランスの>カレー夏のの日々)となっていた。
Jackman’s cheat sheet contained some fairly creative examples, but it’s hard to deny they weren’t pretty accurate. They’d also likely give him a handy rudimentary glossary of important terms for his stay in Japan.

  • Abe First Japanese PM To Visit Japanese-Bombed Darwin

In 1942, Japanese forces launched the only attacks on the Australian mainland, and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe became the first premier to visit Darwin, the most heavily damaged city bombed by the Japanese. Apart from Darwin, Japanese forces also attacked Sydney, Broome, Katherine, Wyndham, Exmouth, Port Headland and Townsville in the early stages of World War II. Abe’s grandfather, former Prime Minister Nobusuke Kishi, was arrested for war crimes, but released without conviction. Kishi was instrumental in re-establishing a strong postwar trade relationship between Australia and Japan. Shinzo Abe arrives in Darwin for first visit by Japanese leader

Kangaroo Scrotums Are the New Victims of Global Warming(英語)

  • Malcolm Who?

Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull visited Japan this week, but you’d barely have known it. Despite repeated claims of the Japan-Australia relationship being stronger than ever, Turnbull’s trip went almost unnoticed by the Japanese media. Turnbull toured an Air Self-Defense Force base with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, seeing first-hand the Australian-made Bushmaster vehicles that Japan uses. The two right-wing leaders also threw a joint luncheon made using pricey Australian ingredients with Japanese-influenced dishes. Tickets for the invitation-only luncheon held by the Japan-Australia Business Co-operation Committee were a hefty 35,000 yen per person. Turnbull might not have done much, but he got a decent feed out of the visit.

    Up There, Kazari!

Australian Sports Day was a fantastic event held at Komazawa Olympic Park yesterday, and I got to go and enjoy some of the proceedings that were a decorative display, (or should I say kazari?), of some of Down Under’s favorite pastimes. The day itself was a ripper, starting with explanations, demonstrations and games of cricket, moving on to games of footy and then ending with a netball exhibition, with sales of Aussie foods, wear and fare such as meat pies and banana bread and cuppas from Club Australia‘s Tad Watanabe and the Australia Cafe van. Needing to deal with duties in the garden and home and able to enjoy lunch…

    She’ll be Apples!

それだけで、she’ll be apples, mate!
