View Larger Map

How Kangaroos Stop Demolition Work Scaring Japanese Kids

Kangaroos have provided a way to provide a friendly face for a company operating in an industry sometimes seen as an unsavory business in Japan. Enomoto Kogyo uses the consumer-facing name of Kaitai Kangaroo for its demolition business; a line of work many Japanese associate with seediness and ties to organized crime. It’s an issue the company addresses directly, and a reason it puts kangaroos front and center of its operations. The company explicitly states it created the mascot to change the image of demolition and make the service more approachable. “The kangaroo character is a friendly mascot that visits customers and helps make demolition less scary for children and…

Aussie Deli…cious!!! Not Authentic Aussie but Still Yummy

McDonald’s Japan finally began long-awaited sales of the Aussie Deli at its outlets across the country from Aug. 31 for a couple of weeks. Kangaeroo.com has been skeptical about the burger, which comes in two versions — the premium sandwich with cheese and the plain burger. The main ingredient is uncooked pastrami beef in the cold burger and spicy mustard sauce acting as the main condiment. Our big beef, if you’ll pardon the pun, is that although the burgers are being promoted as Australian, the taste is nothing like food served Down Under, where local flavored McDonald’s includes beetroot, eggs and even pineapple. Thus we went into the…

Strine-speaking, Sydney-born star made Japan’s queen of natto fermented beans

Strine-speaking Shiori Kutsuna has been declared the 2012 Natto Queen, an award handed out to celebrities who promote fermented soybeans, or natto, as they’re known in Japanese. Kutsuna, a 19-year-old Sydney-born actress, was presented with her award at a ceremony in Tokyo earlier this week. Natto are a popular dish, particularly in eastern Japan, and are highly valued for their nutritional content and health benefits. Less widely praised are the gooey, sticky texture of the fermented beans. Kutsuna was born in Sydney and spent her formative years in Australia’s biggest city, learning how to speak fluent Strine. She is a dual Australian-Japanese citizen. As Japan’s Natto Queen, an award bestowed…

    Big Bundy、

How Did A Japanese Kid Who Spoke No English Fundamentally Change Aussie Culinary Culture?

When Tetsuya Wakuda arrived in Australia, he spoke little English and had no reputation. Today he is recognised as one of Australia’s greatest chefs, proving that friendship between nations can sometimes begin in a kitchen. A new life in Australia Wakuda was born in Hamamatsu, Shizuoka Prefecture, in 1959. At the age of 22 he moved to Sydney, seeking new opportunities. With little English but a determination to learn, he began working in restaurant kitchens, where his talent quickly became clear. Rather than simply cooking traditional Japanese food, Wakuda combined Japanese techniques with Australia’s exceptional seafood, meat and fresh produce….
