Why Did a Japanese Potter Choose a Tiny Aussie Country Town?

When Japanese ceramic artist Tatsuzo Shimaoka visited Australia, he wasn’t looking for fame. Instead, he helped inspire generations of Australian potters through workshops, demonstrations and friendships. His influence can still be found in studios across the country today. A Living National Treasure Tatsuzo Shimaoka (1919–2007) was one of Japan’s most respected ceramic artists. In 1996, he was designated a Living National Treasure for his mastery of traditional pottery techniques.

How Does An Aussie Garden Give Time To Paws?

One of the highlights of our Aussie garden in suburban Tokyo over the years has been kangaroo paws, except for this year. We initially planted a couple, but in the darker corner of the garden, and after the first couple of years one died and the other was sickly and did not bloom. We’ve achieved much greater success planting from seed. In fact, our kangaroo paws did so well we could give plants to most of the neighbors, as well as friends and colleagues. This year, though, only two of about 12 different kangaroo paws have bloomed (though my next-door neighbor’s have flourished!). July can be…
