41. 元々祭りの山車だった違う州２つのBig Pelicans 　オーストラリアの「Big Things」の中にはBig Pelicanが二つあるが、数千キロ離れても両ビッグ・ペリカンが共通するところがたくさんある。 　南オーストラリア州ロクストンにあるBig Pelicanとクイーンズランド州ヌーサのBig Pelicanのいずれも1970年代に祭りの山車として使われるため作られた。 　以降、両Big Pelicanが数回パレードなどにあっちこっちによく登場したが、結局永遠に設置するようになったが、今でもヌーザ版が移動式であり、使おうと思えば出来るという。 　ヌーサは、そもそも観光地であるので、「Big Things」があってもおかしくない地域。同町のBig Pelicanは、同名のボート貸し出し会社前の公園に設置されている。 　一方、ロクストンは農業地域にあり、オーストラリアの最も長い川マレー川を面している静かな町だ。 　ロクストン版のBig Pelicanもいたずらで川に流されたことがあったが、結局無事に回収できた。 　いずれのBig Pelicanが波乱万丈があったが、今では「Big Things」としてきちんと評価され、愛されているようになっている。...

Tjukurrpa, Terra Australis, New Zealand, EendrachtslandそしてAustraliaへ 「オーストラリア」は、ラテン語で「南の大きな大陸」という意味だ。 日本と同じようにオーストラリアも歴代国名も多数ある。 数万年前から今でいうオーストラリアに住んだ先住民たちは「国」というコンセプトさえなかったので、何百もあった部族に暮らし国全体を理解することはなかった。 その変わり、「夢期（ドリーミング）」ということがあった。その「夢期」は、世・存在やすべての物を含めて人それぞれ独自で解釈するすごく抽象的な意味があるが、その中「土」ようは「住む所」などの意味も含めた。その延長で「夢期」と「国」は、ある意味でイコールである。だとしたら、国名と「夢期」が同じであれば無理がない（まあ、あるけどさ、、、言いたいことがわかるよね）。言語も部族によって異なったため何百個もあったので当然言葉が違うが大きな部族の「夢期」の言葉はアレンテ族のTjukurrpa「ジュカーパ」が最もよく使われている例として挙げているじゃないかな？ ヨーロッパ人が今のオーストラリアと接するようになるのは1606年のことだった。古代ローマ時代から地球の南に大きな大陸があるだろうと思われて「Terra Australis（南の土地）」と噂したが確実にその所があったかどうか検証できなかった。 しかし、1606年にオランダ人探検家であるWillem Janszoonが今ウェイパというクイーンズランド州の都市であり、ヨーク岬半島に位置し、カーペンタリア湾に面する。乗務員10人が殺されたり、土地があまり良くなくすぐ去ってオランダ領東インドに戻ったが、探検した国をオランダのゼーラント州にちなんで「ニウ・ゼーラント」と名づけた。しかし、その名前が浸透しなかった（後になってオーストラリアの隣国であるニュー・ジーランドで使えるようになったが）。でも、数年間オーストラリアがニュー・ジーランドと呼ばれたのが事実だ。 数年後の1612年10月。同じオランダ人Dirk Hartogが今のオーストラリア北西部にある世界遺産であるシャーク湾周辺に着陸し、3日間探検して初めて同国の一部の地図を作った。その上、別の名前を名づけた。それが自分の船をちなんで、「Eendrachtsland（Eendrachtsの国という意味）」だった。 17世紀前半ではTerra AustralisあるいはEendrachtslandと呼ばれたが、ヨーロッパ人が行くことがほとんどなかった。17世紀後半になると多くのオランダ人探検家がオーストラリアと接し、同国が「ニュー・ホランド（新オランダ）」と呼ばれるようになった。 以降、「ニュー・ホランド」またはTerra Australisと呼ばれた。1770のキャプテン・クック探検及び1788年イギリスが植民地化した後口語では「ボタニー・ベイ(Botany Bay)」と呼ばれることもあったが19世紀に入るとやっと国名を、ラテン語の英語化である「オーストラリア（Australia）」にした。 1824年当時事実上オーストラリアを統治したイギリス海岸が正式国名を「オーストラリア」と認めた。当時、「オーストラリア」は、現在のニュー・ジーランドを含めたの意味だったが1901年オーストラリアの独立・ニュージーランド抜きの連邦化に伴い現在の使用となった。...

68. メン・アト・ワークのメンバーが死亡 1980年代全世界で大成功したバンドであるMen at Workは、一定の年齢のほとんどのオージーにとって特別な存在である。考えRoo自身も例外ではない。 　メン・アト・ワークの現役時代がそれほど長くなかったが、1982年にオーストラリアで発売した「Down Under」が米国をはじめ世界中に大ヒットした。そして、1983年オーストラリアＩＩがアメリカズ・カップのヨットレースを優勝し、アメリカの132年間同カップの統治にピリオドを打った時に同曲がオーストラリアでまるで国歌のような存在となり、一気にメン・アト・ワークが国民的な英雄のような存在となった。（優勝した当時のオーストラリア雰囲気を説明すると昨年震災直後なでしこジャパンがサッカー女子ワールド・カップを優勝して全国がまるで一つとなって祝った感じが近い。当時豪首相だったボブ・ホーク氏が優勝に対した「今日、ボスが休ませてくれないとくそたれだ」と発言したのは有名な話。当時、高校生だった考えRooはヨットに全く興味ないにもかかわらず学校行く前に優勝した瞬間をラジオで聞き大喜びで祝った覚えがある。） 　しかし、そのメン・アト・ワーク、いやオーストラリア全体にに対して大きなショックが起きたのは今年4月19日のことだった。「Down Under」の最も印象的な所だあろうフルートの部分のフルートを吹いたパーフォーマーであるグレッグ・ハム氏が突然死したとのことだ。現時点、心因が不明だが、アルコール関係だとうわさされている。 　実は、メン・アト・ワークの黄金時代後ハム氏が色々苦労したようだ。1980年代で稼いだがその後それほど大きな実績がなく印税で暮らして時々演奏などをしたハム氏。しかし、「Down Under」がでて25年目いきなり「フルートの部分がオーストラリアの児童歌の盗作だ！」と主張するレコード会社が現れ、メン・アト・ワークを訴えた。客観的に見ればどうも似てないにもかかわらず2010年の判決ではメン・アト・ワークが敗訴し、ハム氏にとって金銭的及び評判にとっても大きな打撃を与えたそうだ。二人の父となったハム氏は、印税を失い弁護費を背負うようになったので「家を売れないと金がない」ということをいい、多くの知り合いが判決後のハム氏が「欝」「苦しいだ」という。 　ちなみに、「Down Under」のおかげでchunderというストライン（オージー英語）が一時期世界中に有名な言葉となった。 　ハム氏は、19日付自宅に訪ねた友人が倒れている姿で見つけたが既に死亡だった。58歳だった。 関連記事 Bugger me, Bob! 豪州元首相の豪俗語が外交的な事件になりかけた頃 豪キャブラリー： Chunder...
