オージー英語では、誰かの友達になった状態をmateyという動詞で表す。「仲良くしている」という意味だ。Mateyは、mateと同様な意味で名詞として使う場合もある。

der Australian English A phrase used to belittle somebody who has stated the obvious. Most commonly used by children and teenagers. Similar to asking “Are you crazy?” or “Are you kidding?” after they say something preposterous. 日本語 当り前なこと、言う必要がなく明確なことを言われた時に対して相手を少し見下す表現だ。とは言え、軽い気持ちで言い、特に子供やティーンエージャーがよく使う。「バカじゃないの？」「狂ってんじゃないの？」をいう時と同じ感覚で使われている。 Plain English 1. 豪キャブラリー： G’day
典型的なオージー英語を一言で言うならG’dayは「これだ！」という感じだ。G’dayほど有名なオージー英語はない。ちなみに、ニュージーランド英語でもG’dayも使う。G’dayはgood dayという古い英語の省略であり、スペルもguddayやgiddayなどさまざまあるが、辞書などで調べるとG’dayが正しいのだ。

Rip-snorterほど最高なことがない。Rip-snorterは直訳すると「破いて鼻を鳴らす」という意味だが、どうしてオージー英語では「最高」という使い方になったのか分かりません。今では、もう死語になりつつあるが、オージー英語の黄金時代の1950・1960年代頃では象徴的な言葉の一つだろう。
