Root / Rooting

Using root as a verb in other countries means to support, but it spells trouble in Strine. Find out how, but only if you’re over 18.

  • Summer Drawing To A Close Even If It Doesn’t Seem So

It’s gonna top 35 degrees again today, but it was pretty obvious to me this morning on my ride that Tokyo’s summer is drawing to a close. Not only are the mornings getting cooler, albeit only slightly, they’re also getting darker. I’ve been using a small, flashing light to let others know I’m around for the past few weeks. But today I needed to use a bigger light that would enable me to see what was going on during the first part of my journey along the Tama River Cycling Road. And instead of being accompanied by the sound of chirping cicadas, the dominant bug life on morning rides this…

  • Tumultuous Times

So much for reverting to daily updates after years of mostly recessed Kangaeroo.com. It has been a week of topsy-turvy turmoil, though, so it’s a little understandable that a long-neglected blog once more fell by the wayside. Or was put aside at least. Monday kicked off the week with a huge change: a house purchase! Once assumed to be unthinkable, it was actually doable. Kangaeroo was granted a loan that will probably not be completed while remaining on this mortal coil. Tuesday saw the timely commission of a large job bringing in enough cash to cover the cost of moving house. Wednesday was the final day of Kangaeroo’s time at…

    Paws and Reflect

Possibly the most meaningful part of my Australian seeds experiment arose today when I transplanted my kangaroo paw seedlings. The great experiment, which I expected would result in me proving to have a green thumb and presenting all my gardening mates with exotic plants has proven only that I am all thumbs. I’ve killed nearly everything I planted, even the everlasting daises and golden everlastings that appeared to be growing so well. I bumped them off by putting them in a hothouse on a boiling hot day, then giving too much fertilizer to the plants that survived. A desert pea also looked promising, but I over-fertilized that, too. I have…

    豪キャブラリー: Drongo

  • Avoiding Only Putting The ‘Little’ Into ‘Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star’

Dragged out of lethargic sloth, I joined Mrs. Kangaeroo in watching the Tachikawa Twinkle Garden projection mapping event on a bleak Sunday, with only dextrous digits saving the show from putting the “little” into Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star. After being bombarded by Facebook ads for weeks, I was pretty keen on going to the event. But when Sunday dawned, it was cold, bleak and wet. Mrs. Kangaeroo had put in a nightshift, and I was happy enough to idle the day away, basically being a pig. But the erstwhile warrior that she is, my spouse dragged me out of my sloth, onto the Tama Monorail and into Tachikawa to see…

  • Fountain of Strewth Frozen Over!

It’s a gloriously sunny morning today, but bloody freezing, as attested to by the Fountain of Strewth freezing over. Birds are coming to Kangaeroo Corner throughout the day every day at this time of year, largely to enjoy a drink or a bath from the Fountain of Strewth. I broke the ice so our avian mates would be able to imbibe if they wanted to, but couldn’t refill the bath as the hose has frozen over. My sports drink formed ice crystals during the morning ride. I’m not a great fan of the cold, but Tokyo has a pretty good winter if you have to have one. It’s generally sunny…
