Big PeopleがなければBig Thingsが揃わない 　オーストラリア各地にある「Big Things」というB級観光名所の正確な数が不明だが百数十件から200件件以上の間は間違いなくある。 　ほとんどの「Big Things」が動物や設置されている地域の名産物などを称えるが、中には「人間」の姿をしているものもある。 　彫刻など芸術性を重視するではなく、ほかの「Big Things」と同じようにコミカルな印象があり、キッシュが中心となっている。 　また、オーストラリアの歴史も「Big Things」そのもの歴史も人間像に見える。 　たとえば、南オーストラリア州都であるアデレードの一角であるメンディンディーという町にBig Scotsman（巨大スコットランド人）がある。 　これは1963年に作られ、事実上オーストラリアの「Big Things」の最も早く作られたものだった（ニューサウスウェールズ州にあるBig Bananaが自称＜初めて＞とも言うだけど、、、）。 　初めてとは言えはっきり言ってイメージとしてオーストラリアと関係ない。 　同じく、「何で？」と思わせる「Big Things」がニューサウスウェールズ州にオーストラリア固有種のナッツであるマカダミアテーマパークにある。 　そもそも変なのは同遊園地のテーマがヨーロッパ中世風のお城だ。 　そして、それらしくかもしれないがオーストラリアらしくないのがお城の真ん前にある医大騎士であるBig Knightだ。 　しかし、そのほか人間像の「Big Things」が国の歴史ともう少しつながりがある。 　 豪経済を昔も今も深い関わり合いがある鉱業を称えるオブジェがみつもある。 　南オーストアリア州カプンダにある鉱山労働者像Map the Minerがある。 　同町がオーストラリア初銅鉱業があり、それを称えるために1988年のオーストラリア建国200周年記念を祝う行事一つとして作られた。 　しかし、2006年にあるティーンエージャーが同像を目立つように軽油をかけ火をつけてから写真撮ろうとしたが、ボヤーとなってMap the Minerを全焼した。 幸いに保険がかけられたため作り直すことができた。 （ちなみに、余談だが、このオブジェがあるカプンダはオーストラリアで最も幽霊が多い町とされているらしい。） 　金が同じような鉱業労働者像の共通点である。 　まず、19世紀半ば頃ニューサウスウェールズ州バスハーストという所に金が見つけられ「ゴールド・ラッシュ」となった。 　今ではバスハースト中心街に入る道路を通ると迎えてくれるのはBig Gold Pannerである。 　砂金を探している男の「Big Things」だ。 　オーストラリアの産業化に重要な役割を果たしたゴールド・ラッシュのキックオフがバスハーストにあったかもしれないが、最も大きかったゴールド・ラッシュがほぼ同じ時期にビクトリア州バララットというところに起きた。 さらに鉱業関係の「Big Things」が以前に掲載したクイーンズランド州ザ・ジェムフィールズにある数箇所も忘れてはいけない。 　またオージーらしく鉱業並みに同国の経済に貢献した農業（厳密に言えば農家だけど、、、）を称える南オーストラリア州ウッディナにあるBig Australian Farmerだ。 　しかいし、このオブジェは他の「Big Things」と違ってあまりコミカルやキッシュな面がなく最も真面目な物だ。 　考えRooの個人的な見解だがこれが「Big Things」より彫刻だ。 　また真面目だけどもっと「Big...

60. メン・アト・ワークのメンバーが死亡 1980年代全世界で大成功したバンドであるMen at Workは、一定の年齢のほとんどのオージーにとって特別な存在である。考えRoo自身も例外ではない。 　メン・アト・ワークの現役時代がそれほど長くなかったが、1982年にオーストラリアで発売した「Down Under」が米国をはじめ世界中に大ヒットした。そして、1983年オーストラリアＩＩがアメリカズ・カップのヨットレースを優勝し、アメリカの132年間同カップの統治にピリオドを打った時に同曲がオーストラリアでまるで国歌のような存在となり、一気にメン・アト・ワークが国民的な英雄のような存在となった。（優勝した当時のオーストラリア雰囲気を説明すると昨年震災直後なでしこジャパンがサッカー女子ワールド・カップを優勝して全国がまるで一つとなって祝った感じが近い。当時豪首相だったボブ・ホーク氏が優勝に対した「今日、ボスが休ませてくれないとくそたれだ」と発言したのは有名な話。当時、高校生だった考えRooはヨットに全く興味ないにもかかわらず学校行く前に優勝した瞬間をラジオで聞き大喜びで祝った覚えがある。） 　しかし、そのメン・アト・ワーク、いやオーストラリア全体にに対して大きなショックが起きたのは今年4月19日のことだった。「Down Under」の最も印象的な所だあろうフルートの部分のフルートを吹いたパーフォーマーであるグレッグ・ハム氏が突然死したとのことだ。現時点、心因が不明だが、アルコール関係だとうわさされている。 　実は、メン・アト・ワークの黄金時代後ハム氏が色々苦労したようだ。1980年代で稼いだがその後それほど大きな実績がなく印税で暮らして時々演奏などをしたハム氏。しかし、「Down Under」がでて25年目いきなり「フルートの部分がオーストラリアの児童歌の盗作だ！」と主張するレコード会社が現れ、メン・アト・ワークを訴えた。客観的に見ればどうも似てないにもかかわらず2010年の判決ではメン・アト・ワークが敗訴し、ハム氏にとって金銭的及び評判にとっても大きな打撃を与えたそうだ。二人の父となったハム氏は、印税を失い弁護費を背負うようになったので「家を売れないと金がない」ということをいい、多くの知り合いが判決後のハム氏が「欝」「苦しいだ」という。 　ちなみに、「Down Under」のおかげでchunderというストライン（オージー英語）が一時期世界中に有名な言葉となった。 　ハム氏は、19日付自宅に訪ねた友人が倒れている姿で見つけたが既に死亡だった。58歳だった。 関連記事 Bugger me, Bob! 豪州元首相の豪俗語が外交的な事件になりかけた頃 豪キャブラリー： Chunder...

66. オーストラリアでの花見をお楽しむのが９月！ 　南半球にあるオーストラリアの季節は日本と正反対であり、桜が咲いて「お花見」するのが4月頃でなく、９月辺りにやるんだ。 　オーストラリアで「お花見」という習慣は元々ない。 　だが、各地でさくらんぼが栽培され、チェリー農園が多いし、桜を見ないわけでもない。 　そこで、在豪日本人コミュニティや親日家を中心に南半球の春にあたる９月にお花見をやることがあるだそうだ。 　今年はまさにそうだ。 　９月２３日（日）にはメルボルンからおよそ４０キロ東の方へオリンダという町がある。そこに多数の桜の木もある「豪国立ツツジガーデン」がある。毎年、そこで「お花見」するそうだ。日本と違って、お祭りモードになったり、お騒ぎすることがないが、本当にお花を楽しむ。また、オーストラリアでは暴れる人が多いため多くの公の場が禁酒しているので、このガーデンもそうだから、お酒なしの花見となる。 　日本のお花見と同じように出来ると思えば、がっかりするだろうが、その代わりに周辺にたくさん魅了的なものがある。 　ガーデン自体がかなり美しい。 　ガーデンのとなりにだれでもプレーできるゴルフ場があるが、一方神秘的なウィリアム・リッケッツ・サンクチュアリーがある。そこで綺麗な森の中に自然と一緒になっている彫刻が多数ある。山の上にもあるので、景色が良くて、メルボルン市内全部丸見える。 　それでも足りなければ、ワイン産地であるヤラ・バレーも車で３０分以内にいける。 Hanami Cherry Blossom Festival...

77. 感激！同性婚保安可決に豪国会内「合唱団」が豪州人統一感の歌を オーストラリアが長年の対立の末、12月7日にようやく同性結婚を合法化し、法案が可決した瞬間国会傍聴席で「皆同じオーストラリア人」という歌を歌い出し、国会議員も一緒に歌ったという感激なハプニングが起こった。 　オーストラリアに同棲が多く、同棲の政治力が強いが同性婚反対である保守派が長い間権力を握った。 　青年でカトリック神学校の信心深い生徒だった2013年～2015年の間総理大臣だったトニー・アボット氏が同性婚を強く対抗し、認める措置を全面的に却下したが、現首相マルコム・ターンブル氏が同性婚支持者で知られた。 　ターンブル氏が与党である（補修派の）自由党内や宗教団体などの反対に対して先月国民投票の実施まで導いた。歴史的に成功率が極めて低かった国民投票では有権者の６割以上の人が同性婚に賛成した。 　その結果をもって、ターンブル氏が国会に同性婚認可法案を提出した。国会下院・上院でも圧倒的に指示された。結局、反対したのはわずか４議員。 　議席内の同性婚が圧倒的に指示されているにもかかわらず、アボット元総理をはじめ数人の議員が棄権した。豪国会では、法案が圧倒的に支持されている場合、表を数える必要がなく、同性婚についての投票がそのケースだった。 　法案が可決し採択されたら、同性婚が合法化された瞬間傍聴席から「我々がオーストラリア人」という曲が一斉歌えるようになった。一緒になった議員もいた。 　その曲が元々1960年代日本でもヒットした「ザ・シーカーズ」が作曲し、「非公式な国歌」と見る人が多い。同曲の歌詞は、オーストラリアの歴史の歴史をちなみ、色々な違いがあっても皆が同じオーストラリア人であることを強調し、対等性や平等や統一感を訴える曲であり、オーストラリア人の間に広く愛されている。 Australian parliament breaks into song after passing same-sex marriage law...
