「やばいリンガル」Stuffed

　米・英語に比べると、オージー英語はやばい時がある。何の変哲もない言葉が、いきなり大きく違った意味になってしまう。Stuffedも、その例の一つ。

Australian English, or Strine, can be more dangerous than British or U.S. English at times. A seemingly innocent word in one place can cause great misunderstanding in another, and “stuffed” is a case in point.

    豪キャブラリー： Conk

    Conkは、個人的に響きがいいオージー英語の一つだと思う。何か（ほとんどの場合は人間に対して使うが、、、）ぶっ飛ばすという意味、どうしてか分からないがそのconkという言葉を聞くとぶっ飛ばす音が長く響くような気がする。必ずそうとは言い切らないので、あくまでも考えRooの個人的な反応だけだ。 　ちなみに、conkは「鼻」という意味もある。

    豪キャブラリー： Dunny

    Dunnyはオージー英語の象徴的な言葉であり、dunnyそのものがオーストラリア人にとって国の代表なイメージでもある。 トイレという意味だけど、外で回りになにもないところにぽつんと置かれているというイメージが浮かび、オーストラリアの広さと大自然の中の孤立さの感覚を思い起こさせるような感じだ。しかし、実際に使うと暗くて臭くて多くの人にとって怖いところだ。おまけに毒蜘蛛の温床する場所でもある。いうまでもなく、dunnyはウォシュレット付きではないはずだ。

    Rockmelons can be a bit of a trap for young players, because it’s a Strine saying for a fruit found pretty much all over the world. Note the distinctive orange texture of the rockmelon flesh. This distinguishes it from the cantaloupe Europeans eat, musk melon preferred by the Japanese and Americans and spansek found in southern Africa.
