    If you wanted to identify one area in which bogan culture becomes genuinely subcultural, I’d choose cars. Particularly: Australia developed a particularly distinctive form of working-class car culture around the Holden–Ford rivalry. The ute is especially significant. It is simultaneously: work vehicle + family vehicle + status symbol + masculine identity + recreational toy. And then there is the Australian phenomenon of the hoon. The hoon and the bogan aren’t identical, but they overlap heavily.

    「Derfred!」って何？ バカにしているの？ Roo-dness Scale 🦘🦘 = Moderate–Informal / くだけた言い方くだけた言い方。友達同士で冗談として使われることが多い表現です。ただし、相手を「頭が悪い」とからかう言葉なので、使う相手は選びましょう。 友達が冷蔵庫を開けて言いました。「牛乳、どこ？」あなたは冷蔵庫の一番前を指差します。「そこだよ。」すると周りのみんなが笑いながら、”Derfred!”と言いました。 Aussieなら、この一言だけで意味が通じます。「そんなことも分からないの？」「当たり前じゃん！」そんな軽いツッコミなのです。 Word Derfred! Pronunciation /dɜː/fred Meaning 相手の発言や行動があまりにも当たり前だったり、少し間抜けだったりしたときに使う、からかいの一言です。日本語なら、「で？」「はいはい。」「当たり前でしょ。」「何言ってるの？」といったニュアンスに近いでしょう。 また、”der brain”と言えば、「おバカさん」「間抜け」という意味になります。 Example “I forgot to charge my phone, and now the battery’s dead.” “Der!” 「スマホを充電し忘れて、電池が切れちゃった。」 「そりゃそうでしょ！」 また、 Don’t be such a der brain. なら、 「そんな間抜けなことするなよ。」という意味になります。 日本語で言うと？ 日本語なら、「当たり前じゃん。」「だから？」「何やってるの。」などが近い表現です。ただし、言い方によっては相手を見下しているように聞こえることがあります。親しい友達同士なら笑って済むこともありますが、初対面の相手には使わないほうが無難です。 Australia–Japan Connection Aussieは会話の中で、お互いを軽くからかう文化があります。”Der!” も、その一つです。深刻な悪口というより、「今のはちょっと抜けてたね。」と笑い合うための言葉。ただし、その場の雰囲気や相手との関係がとても大切です。外国人が使うと、思った以上に失礼に聞こえてしまうこともあります。 Aussie英語を勉強していると、「意味」よりも、「距離感」のほうが難しいと感じることがあります。”Der!” は、まさにそんな言葉です。仲の良い友達なら笑って終わる一言。でも、相手をよく知らないうちは使わない。そのほうが、お互い気持ちよく会話を楽しめます。Aussie英語では、「何を言うか」と同じくらい、「誰に言うか」が大切なのです。

Researchers describe the word as unusually productive in Australian English. And then there is bogan pronunciation. The stereotype exaggerates features of Australian English: fishing → fishin’going → goin’mate → maaate The dropping of final consonants, broad vowels, swearing and exaggerated informality become part of the performance of bogan identity.
