Deep-Fried, Battered Spuds Take The Cake In Australia’s Potato Partition; They’re Not A Seafood

豪州名物・揚げイモ戦争:「ケーキ」派、断じてシーフードにあらず

Australia, while being one of the most diverse countries on the planet, is generally unified in its day-to-day approach to living, though there is one matter that threatens to bring about civil war.

多文化共生国家オーストラリアは、日常生活では概ね平和かつ協調的に運営されている……のだが、たった一つ、内戦寸前の火種がある。

Australia is divided over what to call a deep-friend, battered potato that comprises one of the staples of Strayan tucker.

それが、衣をつけて揚げた薄切りジャガイモの呼び方である。

Nearly every town in Australia has a fish-and-chip shop, carrying over the British tradition from the colonial era.

And a staple of those chippies is that particular slice of spud dipped in a thick batter and then deep fried to crispiness.

英国伝来のフィッシュ&チップス店は、豪州ほぼ全域に存在し、その定番メニューが、厚手の衣にくぐらせ、油に沈め、カリッと仕上げたあのスライス・ポテトである。

Kangaeroo calls this culinary delight a potato cake. It’s hard to think of a delicacy that compares with the deliciousness of a cake, so the potato cake is a perfect description of this Down Under comfort food.

考えRoo自身(ヴィクトリア州出身)はこれを(当然に)「ポテト・ケーキ」と呼ぶ。ケーキほど尊い名詞は他に無く、したがって「ポテト・ケーキ」は正当かつ美味の象徴である、と断言したい。

However, ordering a potato cake in some parts of Australia is close to a declaration of war.

しかし、一部地域で「ポテト・ケーキ」と注文する行為は、ほぼ開戦通告である。

While sensible regions of the country like Victoria, where I come from, Tasmania and the Murray River regions of New South Wales use potato cake.

ヴィクトリア、タスマニア、NSW内陸(マレー川流域)など良識派は「ケーキ」呼称を使用。


But in eastern NSW, Queensland and the Australian Capital Territory, they refer to the food as potato scallops, even though a scallop is a type of shellfish. Parts of northern England also apparently call the dish a potato scallop, too. Considering these areas are all predominantly rugby league playing areas, there seems to be little need (or hope) of engaging in intellectual examination behind their use of this name.

一方、東NSW・クイーンズランド・ACTといったリーグ地帯は、なぜかシーフードであるホタテと同名の「ポテト・スキャロップ」を採用。(北イングランドにも同盟者あり。名付け理由の深掘りは、まあ、期待せずに。)

Similarly in the case of potato fritters, the preferred term for South Australians and New Zealanders. As a fritter is used for a lighter, puffier pastry instead of the sturdier, heartier battered fry of the actual food, I can see how this term gained its regional flavor.

さらに南オーストラリア&NZは「ポテト・フリッター」派。フリッター=軽やか&ふんわり系の揚げ菓子名称を頑固な厚衣フライに適用するあたり、こちらも地域色が濃厚である。

Westralians and Northern Territorians, meanwhile, true to their nature just go with the flow and tend to call the dish by whatever name it’s used wherever they are.

西オーストラリア&北部準州は、らしくも「どっちでもいいじゃん」派。現場主義で呼称が揺らぐ、ある意味もっとも豪州的な態度といえる。

In Japan, the closest thing to a potato cake is the hashed brown, which, of course, comes from North America, where they call scones biscuits, automatically disqualifying them from any sensible debate about this crucial issue.

ちなみに日本における相当物はハッシュドポテト。ただし、北米発祥ゆえ、スコーンを「ビスケット」と呼ぶ文化圏の命名センスは、この議論の審査資格から丁重に除外したい。

Potato cakes are also eaten in Ireland, Scotland and the Indian subcontinent, where they take slightly different forms and are thus not named the same, avoiding the need to take sides in the most uncivil aspect of Australia’s civil dispute.

なお、類似品はアイルランド、スコットランド、インド亜大陸にも存在するが、呼称が異なるため、豪州式宗派抗争を回避できている点は評価したい。

The naming differences trace back to colonial settlement patterns: migrants from different parts of the British Isles settled in different regions, bringing with them their dialects, vocabulary, and culinary traditions. Over time, these regionally-preferred terms stuck.

The divide over potato cake vs potato scallop vs potato fritter is a telling example of how language, culture, and identity intersect. It shows regional identity, immigrant history and local food culture and heritage.

呼び名の分裂は、植民初期の移住分布と方言・食文化の定着過程に端を発し、地域アイデンティティの証明として、今日まで見事に温存された結果である。

But it’s an undeniable fact that this dish is a cake made from potatoes, and not a seafood. At least where I come from.

結論:本品は「ポテトで構成されたケーキ」であり、海産物ではない。少なくとも、考えRooの故郷基準においては、である。
